What to see in the old Town

Treviso Civic Museums
The Civic Museums of Treviso house works of extraordinary importance, a source of great pride for the Treviso’s people. The Church of Santa Caterina, dating back to the fourteenth century, and the adjoining convent of the Servants of Mary represent the main museum. Inside, a rich archaeological section offers a precious testimony of the history and the territory from the second millennium BC. until the early Middle Ages. The convent houses frescoes from the 14th and 15th century, such as the splendid Cycle of Sant’Orsola, by Tomaso da Modena, and other important paintings ranging up to the 19th century, including works by Bellini, Lotto, Tiziano and Tiepolo. Furthermore, from the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, some masterpieces of the Treviso twentieth century, by Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini, have been received. Born in Treviso in 1889 Martini upset the laws of sculpture with his revolutionary work, using materials of different nature: from wood to stone, from clay to bronze.

Casa dei Carraresi
Casa dei Carraresi, in the 14th century, was a hostel that offered rest to travelers. The Da Carrara coat of arms is visible on the façade to recall not so much the use of the structure as the home of the noble family, as the seat for the activity of their officials. The building, in Romanesque style, preserves several medieval frescoes inside. It currently hosts interesting conferences, seminars and above all exhibitions of strong international appeal.

The Duomo of Treviso
The Cathedral of the Duomo of Treviso, dedicated to St. Peter, was built in the 11th-12th centuries (the Romanesque crypt was in fact probably completed in 1030), but what we see reconstruction took place in the eighteenth century in neo-Renaissance style. In 1836 the pronaos was built which characterizes the façade on the square with its wide staircase. The horizon is crossed by seven domes, five of which are aligned on the axis of the central nave. Among the many works preserved inside the church, we should mention the Annunciation by Tiziano, the splendid painting that the artist from Cadore painted in the lower third of the sixteenth century.
